Missouri City, Texas – a truly hand-crafted town

Just twenty miles Southwest of Houston, Texas, Missouri City stretches across 29.8 square miles of land, mostly inside of Fort Bend County. A small portion of the city extends into Harris County, and is bordered by Houston, Stafford, Sugar Land, and Arcola.

Missouri City history

In 1890, this robust city was brought to life by two real estate investors from Houston named R.M. Cash and L.E. Luckle. The pair bought a four square mile piece of land and began advertising the property in St. Louis, Missouri as a “land of genial sunshine and eternal summer.” The four square mile piece land they had purchased was directly along the route of the BBB&C Railway. Little did they know, this move would soon lead to creating quite a busy town.

Three years later, another investor by the name of W.R. McElroy bought an eighty acre parcel of land, calling it “Missouri City.” One year later, it was declared an official city by registration with the state. And because the city was located along the route of a major railway, providing convenience of travel for visitors and residents, it didn’t take long for this city to garner the identity of a railroad town.

Humble beginnings

A severe blizzard hit the town in 1895, and while many settlers fled for a more stable climate, those who stayed went on to build successful farms and ranches.

Other than the farms, Missouri City’s first official business was a blacksmith – a very necessary business to have in a small town. They also built a general store. The first homes and a school were built in the early 1900s, and the very first post office opened in 1897.

Because Missouri City was built along the railroad route, residents were able to commute to neighboring cities for work, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the city really boomed due to the prevalence of the automobile. Of course, the automobile soon replaced the railroads completely.

Since then, the city has experienced grand economic growth, with more people finding their way to this charming town. And by 2016, the Missouri City population had grown to just over 74,000.
